Tiversa Announces FBI-LEEDA Sponsorship
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA, March 18, 2010 - Tiversa today announced a sponsorhip of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) program. FBI - LEEDA is a not-for-profit corporation, focused on advancing police leadership through the exchange of information and expansion of training programs for law enforcement executives. Tiversa educates law enforcement personnel across the country by demonstrating the very real and growing number of tactics used by criminals to commit financial fraud, medical fraud and identity theft.
As the leader in P2P Intelligence and Security, Tiversa regularly finds both corporations as well as individuals suffering data breaches, similar to those that have plagued the financial services and retail industries. Losses have translated into privacy violations, compliance issues, costly fines, embarrassment on the corporate side. In other cases, criminals are exploiting found Personal Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to commit financial fraud and medical identity theft.
"Identity theft and the exploitation of sensitive information is a constantly-moving target", says Robert Boback, CEO, Tiversa. "We support FBI-LEEDA's efforts in educating law enforcement about the serious threats that individuals face in regards to identity theft and fraud."
In the 60 day research period (2/25-4/26/09), Tiversa downloaded
3,908,060 files (spreadsheets, documents, PDFs, Rich Text files, databases, and PST files only) that had been inadvertently exposed via P2P networks. Many of these contain sensitive information, such as PHI/PII, emanating from healthcare providers, accountants and employers. Worst yet - once disclosed via file-sharing networks, this heavily sought-after data spreads incredibly fast.
User-issued P2P searches attempting to access financial, accounting, and medical information have risen 59.7% since September 2008. For the years of 2006 and 2007, the average annual rise in the search totaled just over 10%.
